Role of the Guidance Department

School

The School Counselor:

  • coordinates school's counseling program
  • serves as a student advocate in the school setting
  • assesses and interprets students' behavior as it affects learning
  • provides individual, group, family, and crisis couneling to students in the school
  • provides developmental guidance lessons in the classroom.

Home

The School Counselor:

  • promotes partnerships to increase parental involvement and participation in students' social-emotional, and academic success
  • provides opportunities to learn effective parenting skills
  • creates a positive learning environment by working with parents
  • provides information to parents concerning academic and career planning
  • provides referral sources as requested.      

Community

The School Counselor:

  • identifies students' needs
  • serves as a liaison between home, school, and community
  • confers with community resources and agencies
  • enables students to understand the relationship between learning experiences and the world of work.    

School Counselors

School Counselors are certified professional who are specially trained in counseling interventions, theories, and techniques. School counselors --as an intergral part of the schools' total education program--work with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and local businesses to help students become responsible and productive citizens. School counselors promote educational success, interpersonal skills, and self-understanding. Students are educated in decision-making, problem-solving, goal setting, self-esteem, and education and career opportunities.
